Overview:

Timberline Retreat is a 3,389-square-foot residential remodel located in Park City, UT. Completed in October 2024 after a six-month process beginning in April 2024, the project transformed an existing home into a mountain modern haven. The clients wanted a refreshed exterior and interior layout that would fit the Park City setting while providing more bedrooms and spacious areas for gatherings.

Project Goals:

The clients envisioned a home suited for hosting family and friends. They requested an open great room, kitchen, and dining area with two islands, as well as updated bedrooms to accommodate adult children and grandchildren. The primary objective was to create a place that felt like a genuine mountain retreat, blending darker exterior tones and natural materials to match the local scenery.

Design and Implementation:

Working with the existing structure posed the challenge of remaining within the established setbacks. The team expanded the home, reconfiguring the floor plan for modern appeal and functionality. The exterior style shifted to a mountain modern look, featuring iron ore board and batten walls, black shingle and metal roofs, and lighter stone for contrast. Wood beams introduced warmth and comfort.

Inside, the remodel focused on making public spaces feel open and inviting, with bedrooms and private areas placed for peace and quiet. The kitchen and great room form the heart of the home, providing ample space to prepare meals and gather. A 3D scan of the existing home helped the team model accurate plans and address structural considerations, making the design process reliable and precise.

Challenges and Resolutions:

The team navigated local setback requirements and worked closely with the builder to fit a front porch and all requested elements within the constraints of the lot. Adjusting the layout and reassigning some rooms made it possible to include everything the clients requested. By understanding the development guidelines and integrating them into the design from the start, the team delivered a plan that honored both the clients’ wishes and the city’s requirements.

Outcome:

The clients expressed satisfaction with the completed project, appreciating that the remodel combined their desired mountain modern style with the open, flexible spaces they needed for large family gatherings. The darker exterior hues, natural materials, and welcoming porches aligned the home with its Park City setting.
